Fibroids: What they are and when to be concerned

What are fibroids

Up to 80% of women are expected to develop fibroids throughout the course of their lifetime. While common, fibroids are generally not a point of concern for most women, and the majority of cases do not require major treatment and are often even asymptomatic.

However, depending on the severity of your symptoms, treatments for fibroids may be necessary and help you live a more pain free life. Keep reading to learn more about this condition and when it might be time to seek help!

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are generally benign tumors that grow inside the uterus and vary in size throughout the course of a lifetime. Since cancerous fibroids are extremely rare, most women who develop fibroids do not experience much pain and can often go untreated if they’re asymptomatic; however, for some, fibroid pain is intense and some data suggests that it may be connected to conditions such as endometriosis.

There are three main types of fibroids found in the uterus. Subserosal fibroids, which are the most common, often grow outside the uterus and into the pelvis. Intramural fibroids stay in the muscular wall of the uterus and Submucosal fibroids, though rare, can grow in the open space in the uterus.

Symptoms of fibroid pain:

Some of the most common symptoms of fibroid pain are pelvic pain, heavy and long periods, frequent urination, and constipation. These symptoms are also characteristic of many other hormonal conditions, so if you are facing any severe symptoms and do not know what condition you have, it may be best to consult your physician about what your pain could mean and develop a treatment plan.
